The Africa Oxford Initiative (AfOx) and the Mastercard Foundation Scholars program have partnered to create the novel and ambitious Mastercard Foundation AfOx Scholarship program.
Through the cooperation, the University of Oxford will provide 400 young African scholars like yourself the chance to pursue master’s degrees in pandemic prevention and recovery at no cost.
The Mastercard Foundation AfOx Scholarship program will benefit you if you are a self-motivated young African.
Also, you should be based in your community and have an international perspective to pursue graduate studies at the University of Oxford.
The goals of the Mastercard Foundation and AfOx are collegiality, empathy, dedication, and inclusivity.
The Scholarship is a component of the larger AfOx Graduate Scholars program, which will assist you as an African student to take advantage of Oxford’s prospects and success during and beyond your academic careers.
Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Breakdown:

Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Eligibility:
- Historically underrepresented groups including women in academia, refugees and internally displaced persons, and scholars with special needs.
- The scholarship will be available to any student who resides in Africa and has been granted a conditional offer by the university.
Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Benefits:
- You will have your tuition fees fully paid for.
- Scholars will be assisted in pursuing 4- to 6-month placements in prestigious African organizations for their Ubuntu period of service following the completion of their Master’s program.
- Under the guidance of eminent academics and practitioners located in Africa, the Scholars will work on projects throughout the continent and be able to forge meaningful career paths there.
- A return economy ticket, expenses for the Immigration Health Surcharge and visa, a settling-down stipend, and access to a Thrive Fund for emergencies are among the other logistical supports offered by the scholarship.
How to Apply for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program:
- Applying for this scholarship requires you to indicate that you would like to be considered for AfOx funding when you submit your application to the University of Oxford through the graduate admissions portal by the deadline for your intended course of study.
- For many low-income countries, the £75 Oxford University Masters application price is waived upon request. You should check out the application fee waiver section on the official website.
- Following a conditional offer from their course, qualified individuals will be encouraged to apply for the AfOx Graduate Scholarship Program. During the application process, all invited candidates will be required to complete the AfOx Graduate Scholarship questionnaire.
- Before choices are made, the shortlisted candidates will participate in virtual interviews. The schedule will be disclosed during the interview phase.
