German or International students have a shot at doctoral studies at the Leibniz Institute of European History in Germany financed by the IEG Historical Fellowships.
The Historical Fellowships program is financed by the federal and the state Government. Applicants should be master’s graduates or pursuing their PhD in theology or history.
Fellows will also have to be working towards their doctorate in the past three years. The IEG Historical Fellowships program awards a monthly allowance of €1,350 to students for their research work.
After the program completion, Fellows will have their dissertations evaluated by supervisors in their home institutions.
The Leibniz Institute of European History does not organize exams or award certificates because they are a research institution.

IEG Fellowships for Doctoral Students 2025 Benefits:
The federal and the state governments share funding for the IEG Historical Fellowships. The research tasks included in the application are the only things that can be done with the fellowships at the IEG. The following are the benefits of the IEG Fellowships:
- Fellowship holders may be eligible for a family allowance if their partners go with them to Mainz and do not earn more than 450 euros per month. Kindly specify in your application if you are traveling to Mainz with a companion.
- Fellows may apply for a child allowance if they travel to Mainz with their minor children.
- The monthly value of the IEG Fellowship for PhD students is €1,350.
IEG Fellowships for Doctoral Students 2025 Application Deadline:
The IEG has two deadlines per year. August 15 and February 15 2024 for doctoral student fellowship applications.

Email applications for the IEG Historical Fellowships should be submitted in the following order, with the underlined document attachments:
- The application form was filled out.
- A resume and, if relevant, a list of publications (please do not include images).
- A synopsis of the doctoral thesis (limited to 15,000 characters, not including spaces and footnotes).
- The format of the doctoral dissertation.
- A comprehensive schedule for the expected duration of the Institute visit.
