The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) serves as the leading authority in the United Kingdom for funding fundamental and strategic research in the biological sciences.
To effectively accomplish its mission, the BBSRC actively promotes the transfer of knowledge from groundbreaking research into practical applications across various sectors, including business, industry, public policy, and community engagement in the biosciences.
In support of its objectives, BBSRC provides robust financing for postgraduate training and innovative research initiatives at universities and research institutions throughout the UK, including those facilities that are directly supported by BBSRC itself.
The funding is primarily dispensed through Doctoral Training Grants (DTGs), which are allocated every three years, allowing universities to plan and invest in the next generation of researchers.
Specifically, the University of St Andrews plays a pivotal role in this funding structure, offering around seven sponsored positions each year in disciplines such as biology and related fields, which encompass physics, chemistry, and psychology.
These opportunities are open to both UK and international students who possess a strong first degree or a qualification deemed equivalent.
The educational programs within the schools of biology and psychology extend financial support for a duration of up to four years, enabling students to fully engage in their studies and research endeavours.
For prospective candidates, the BBSRC website serves as a comprehensive resource, providing detailed information on essential aspects such as fieldwork opportunities, fees, stipends, and additional project guidelines.
