Benefits:
The Human Rights LL.M. Fellowship recipients can anticipate receiving:
The advantage of partial or complete tuition waivers, as well as, in certain situations, a living stipend, is contingent on the applicant’s proven need for financial assistance.
Special consideration for admission to Columbia’s Human Rights Clinic, a cutting-edge program that teaches students how to be critical, strategic, and creative human rights advocates while advancing human rights scholarship and methods and pursuing social justice in collaboration with communities and civil society.
Selection Criteria:
Applicants from Africa, Asia, and Latin America, as well as those who encounter barriers to leadership and education due to their socioeconomic status, gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, or religion.
You must have a legal degree.
Generally speaking, a degree in a non-legal field even if it is followed by a master’s degree in law is insufficient for admission.
Admission is not available to applicants who have obtained a law degree through distant learning or correspondence study.
Since the LL.M. program is a full-time course of study, students are not allowed to work off campus while they are enrolled.
How to Apply:
A filled-out application submitted to LSAC for admission to the LL.M. program
One to two pages of a separate, brief essay outlining your qualities for the fellowship.
You should talk about your human rights work, both past and present, as well as your commitment to and interest in the field, career aspirations, and human rights vision.
Recommendation letters that highlight the candidate’s past efforts and prospects as a scholar, practitioner, or human rights advocate.
If they provide feedback on your human rights work and dedication, the two recommendation letters sent with the LL.M. application may also be used for the Fellowship.
If one or both of the recommendation letters for the application to the LL.M. Program fail to address your past and future interests in human rights.
A third letter of reference from a professor or human rights professional who is knowledgeable of the applicant’s human rights commitment, background, and future intentions may be submitted by the applicant via the LSAC online application.
