About the International Monetary Fund:
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is an organization consisting of 189 member nations with the primary goal of promoting global financial stability, facilitating international trade, fostering high employment and sustainable economic growth, and reducing poverty worldwide.
Established in 1945, the IMF’s extensive membership gives it a broad mandate and ensures accountability.
One of its key responsibilities is to uphold the stability of the international monetary system, which encompasses exchange rates and cross-border payments, enabling countries to engage in international trade and financial transactions.
What Will Be Your Responsibilities When Selected?
A unique basis for an intellectually stimulating and rewarding career as an economist is provided by the EP, which gives you a comprehensive understanding of the activities of the IMF.
You will rotate through two departmental assignments throughout the three-year program, joining economic teams that focus on fiscal, monetary, debt, balance of payments, and related issues in addition to regional and national monitoring.
You will be given actual work and real responsibility as an IMF economist right away because this is not a trainee role.
This could involve developing policies, conducting operational work in a nation or region, conducting research, building capacity, and instructing.
Selection Criteria:
- You must be a recent PhD graduate in a relevant field of study, or within a year of finishing your PhD.
- A citizen of one of the nations that make up the IMF. Check the list of IMF member nations with this LINK
- You must enroll in the IMF EP program before the age of 34
How to Apply:
If your application is selected for further consideration, you will be invited to a preliminary interview that lasts 30 to 40 minutes.
During this time, you will be asked to provide a high-level summary of your research paper and address questions about your interpersonal and communication skills as well as economic topics linked to the IMF’s work.
The most recent transcript from your PhD program, three academic references which cannot be from current IMF staff members, and a research paper ideally of publishable standard or one or two chapters of your dissertation may be requested after the preliminary interview.
A panel of two or three senior IMF economists and a human resources officer will conduct in-person interviews this year.
All candidates who advance to the panel interview stage will be forwarded to an internal committee of senior personnel for assessment when the panel interviews are concluded, usually by late January.
Offers to successful applicants will be sent out in February and the incoming class of the Economist Program will start at the IMF the following September.
