In 2024, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Network of Excellence for Land Governance in Africa (NELGA) will be offering a Research Fellowship.
This fellowship presents a unique opportunity for academics and professionals from NELGA partner institutions to engage in cutting-edge research that addresses the critical intersection of land governance and climate change.
The 2024 fellowship aims to foster strong intellectual and practical connections essential for driving effective land policy reforms across Africa.
It will empower African academics to delve into significant topics such as gender dynamics in land rights, pastoralism, digitalization, and African food systems, contributing to the advancement of knowledge and policy development in these crucial areas.
NELGA is dedicated to strengthening institutional and human resources to effectively advance the AU Agenda on Land.
By collaborating with experts in land governance and equipping them with comprehensive, evidence-based knowledge, NELGA supports African governments, policymakers, and civil society in achieving sustainable land management and governance.

Benefits of Fellowship:
The fellowship includes a monthly research budget of EUR 460.
A flat-rate travel allowance of:
- EUR 280 for within-country travel
- EUR 430 for travel to neighboring countries
- EUR 630 for within-region travel and
- EUR 980 for travel outside of the region
Selection Requirements:
Applications for funding for NELGA research fellowships are invited from staff members or students at NELGA partner institutions who have experience in land governance or a similar discipline. You must possess the following requirements:
You must be a citizen of an African nation.
You must have completed at least your undergraduate degree at a state or state-recognized institution of higher learning.
You must be enrolled in classes or employed by NELGA partner universities or affiliated institutions.
You must return to your studies or duty station upon completion of the fellowship
You must have been granted a leave of absence by your home institution to conduct a field study.
Study Areas the Qualifies for the Fellowship:
You must have a background in land governance, land management, or a closely related discipline such as land administration, land economics, urban and regional planning, or geomatics.
Qualification Criteria:
The two most crucial selection criteria are academic accomplishments and a compelling, well-planned research proposal.
Any further materials that bolster the research proposal’s academic significance or offer details about your relevant extracurricular activities will also be taken into account during the evaluation process.

A thorough explanation of the research concept and a summary of earlier studies not more than ten pages.
A weekly timetable for the scheduled research projects.

Details regarding your qualifications provided by a recent reference from an academic institution.
