The Shakira Choonara Young African Scholarship Award is presented annually to a deserving final-year undergraduate or graduate student (PhD, master’s, or honors) in Africa.
This prestigious award covers your tuition fees as an underprivileged student who has excelled academically, achieving at least 70% in both current and previous years of study.
You should be a university degree candidate with a strong academic record. Preference will be given to those conducting research in the broader field of development, with a focus on areas such as gender studies and health sciences.

About Shakira Choonara:
Dr. Shakira Choonara is an accomplished public health professional and a dedicated activist.
She has received numerous awards and recognitions for her work, including being named the 2017 National Research Foundation of SA Next Generation Researcher, the 2017 Woman of the Year in Health in South Africa (SA), and the Destiny Magazine Most Powerful Woman under 40 in SA.
She currently holds the position of Technical Specialist for the Department of Health Workforce and Sexual and Reproductive Health at the World Health Organization Headquarters.
Additionally, she plays a crucial role as the Thematic Lead on Bodily Autonomy and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) at the UN Women Headquarters.

Selection Criteria:
- Young people in the age range of 21 to 35
- You must be a national of one of the 54 states in Africa.
- You need to be enrolled in an African university’s last year of undergraduate or graduate study.
- Show that you have a financial need by stating that you will use the scholarship to pay for your last year’s tuition to earn your degree.
- A track record of outstanding academic performance

Young women and youth from underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply.
