The Ocean Foundation, in collaboration with the Boyd Lyon Sea Turtle Fund, is excited to announce the acceptance of applications for the prestigious Boyd N. Lyon Scholarship for the year 2025.
This scholarship is dedicated to the memory of Boyd N. Lyon, an esteemed researcher and beloved friend, who passionately dedicated his life to the study and conservation of the awe-inspiring sea turtle.
Boyd Lyon was known for his innovative hand-capturing technique, a method he developed to examine and tag turtles without the stress and complications associated with netting.
His pioneering approach not only minimized harm to these creatures but also provided valuable opportunities to study the infrequently observed male sea turtles, an area often overlooked by other researchers.
His commitment to understanding and protecting these magnificent animals serves as the cornerstone of this scholarship.
The Boyd Lyon Sea Turtle Fund is actively seeking applications from Masters and PhD students whose research endeavours align with the scholarship’s mission: to enhance their knowledge of sea turtle behaviour and habitat utilization within the marine ecosystem.
The Fund places a strong emphasis on supporting field research projects that contribute to the effective management and conservation of sea turtles in coastal habitats.
Applications are encouraged from students whose work tackles a wide range of pertinent questions in the realm of sea turtle study and protection.
These can include, but are not limited to, life history studies, oceanography, maritime affairs, environmental sciences, public policy, community planning, and natural resources management.
